Zygoma (cheek bone), is a very strong and sturdy bone in the facial region. At times, we get patients who need full mouth rehabilitation, but the quality and volume of bone in the upper jaw is poor and inadequate. This poor quality bone could be due to various reasons such as resorption of bone due to aging or poor oral hygiene. In such cases, conventional dental implants cannot be used. For such patients, we advise zygoma implants. This means, we take an anchorage for the implant from the zygomatic bone (cheek bone). After thorough evaluation of the patient with the necessary scan, we virtually plan the zygomatic implant in special software, and then the procedure of placing the implant is carried out.
The implants are available in lengths ranging from 30 to 52.5mm. These implants are placed at an angle to the zygomatic bone. Because of the sturdy anchorage achievable in the dense bone of the cheek region, and the wide stress distribution achieved on these tilted implants, prosthesis can often be immediately placed at the time of surgery.
